How to play Ragnarök Online on macOS using Wine

Installation

Client

  1. If you want to play on the International server, then download the IRO client custom installer.
  2. Download and then install XQuartz.
  3. Download and then install Wine.
  4. Open Wine.
  5. Enter the following:

    curl -LRsSO https://cosmix.uk/scripts/wine-application-installer.sh
  6. Enter the following:

    bash wine-application-installer.sh ro international-standard
  7. When you are prompted to install Wine Mono and Wine Gecko, press Install.
  8. Complete the installation processes.

Extensions

ROExt

  1. Download and then extract ROExt.
  2. In Finder, select the files dinput.asi and dinput.ini, and then press commandC.
  3. Press shiftcommandG, enter the following, and then press return:

    ~/.wine/drive_c
  4. Navigate to the folder in which you installed the Ragnarök Online client.
  5. Press optioncommandV.

SimpleROHook

  1. In Wine, enter the following:

    curl -LRsSO https://cosmix.uk/scripts/wine-application-installer.sh && \
    bash wine-application-installer.sh SimpleROHook
  2. If you are prompted to install Wine Mono, then press Install.
  3. Complete the installation process.
  4. Download and then extract SimpleROHook.
  5. Select the folder that you extracted in the previous step, and then press commandC.
  6. Press shiftcommandG, enter the following, and then press return:

    ~/.wine/drive_c
  7. Navigate to the folder in which you installed the Ragnarök Online client.
  8. Press optioncommandV.

Usage

  1. In Finder, press shiftcommandG.
  2. Enter the following and then press return:

    ~/.wine/drive_c
  3. Navigate to the folder in which you installed the Ragnarök Online client.
  4. Open the file Ragnarok.exe.

Uninstallation

To uninstall XQuartz and Wine:

  1. Log out from any and all other macOS user accounts.
  2. Ensure that XQuartz and Wine are closed.
  3. Open Terminal.
  4. Enter the following:

    launchctl unload /Library/LaunchAgents/org.macosforge.xquartz.startx.plist && \
    sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macosforge.xquartz.privileged_startx.plist && \
    sudo rm -rf \
    '/Applications/Wine Stable.app' \
    /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app \
    /Library/LaunchAgents/org.macosforge.xquartz.*.plist \
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macosforge.xquartz.*.plist \
    /opt/X11 \
    /private/etc/manpaths.d/*-XQuartz \
    /private/etc/paths.d/*-XQuartz && \
    sudo pkgutil --forget org.macosforge.xquartz.pkg
  5. Enter your macOS user account password.
  6. Restart the computer.

Common problems and their solutions

The client does not open when I press Play after updating it

Unfortunately, the following regional versions of the Ragnarök Online client are not compatible with Wine because they incorporate anti-cheating software such as CheatDefender, EasyAntiCheat, GameGuard, or Hackshield:

The text is distorted

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Enter the following:

    nano -Sw ~/.bashrc
  3. Enter the following:

    export FREETYPE_PROPERTIES='truetype:interpreter-version=35'
  4. Press controlX, Y, and then return. (Do not press controlY.)
